On Thursday 9th May 2013, The Marshall Society was delighted to host a joint event with the Cambridge University Italian Society. The event was a filming of the award winning documentary, “Girlfriend in a Coma” followed by a Q&A session with the film’s producers, Annalisa Piras and Bill Emmott. Annalisa Piras is a documentarist filmmaker and former London correspondent of L’Espresso.
Bill Emmott is an independent writer and consultant on international affairs, and the former editor of The Economist. “Girlfriend in a Coma” (trailer) has been defined by Il Sole 24 Ore as “Marvellously indigestible” and The Sunday Times said it “Brilliantly illustrates the true tragedy of Italy”. Speaking to a full-house audience comprising Italians, Economists and a combination of both, Emmott and Piras painted a portrait of Italy, its culture, its politics and its people – and offered a path towards reform.
